Love Monologue
by Laura Mercurio Ebohon

I wish I could cure you,
Lighten up the stains of your soul,
Healing the wounds of the heart,
Kiss your tired eyes,
Shut on the rest of the world.
Caressing your face,
To cancel the wakes of a life without truce.

I wish I could wake you up
Blowing air and light through your hair,
Grazing your hands softly,
Avoiding the furrows on your palms,
Guardians of your deep abyss
Dark labyrinth,
Mysterious layers of your being.

I wish I could massage your back
Mixing nerves and senses,
Following the bend of your ribs and muscles,
Generating vital impulse,
Talking with the voice of my heart,
Dancing to the rhythm of your thoughts,
Feeling the scent of your ideas,
Tasting your convictions.

I wish I could fly with you...
Expert pilot of my heavy plane of fears,
Together, reckless acrobats without a net.
I wish I could hold you tight
Embedding myself in you,
Perfect grooves,
Mosaic of unforeseen events,
Touching your soul
For just a moment, a sweet endless moment.

In the summer of 2010, Laura invited me via Twitter to collaborate on a video project featuring one of her poems, Love Monologue. Spiritual artist Regina Aislin aka Cassia Ferre had read Laura's book Se Guardo dentro — If I look inside and got inspired by Love Monologue. She would compose the music and record the vocals and, along with some of my photographs, Jack Varnell (The Emotional Orphan) was to create the video.

I absolutely loved the poem and took a couple of days to sketch a few images I thought would reflect the poem's text and vibe. My dear friends Melissa and Patrick Samuel were happy to model for the shoot. On a sunny afternoon we explored possible locations and rehearsed some choreographic elements.

Eventually we decided to keep it as natural as possible so not to take away from the poem; this meant using location light only and avoiding dramatic poses. Melissa and Patrick tried to translate the verses line by line into movements and body language, sometimes speaking the lines while doing so.

It was an amazing shoot, and the above gallery shows just a few of my favourite pictures in terms of serving the poem's presentation. Jack did an amazing job producing the video, always emphasizing simplicity. This way, Laura's poem and Regina's vocals got center-stage, and I think the result is a great example of poetic expression.

Certainly, being a poet myself, I have drawn a lot of inspiration from this collaborative work. I am honoured to have been a part of this project. In Laura's spirit, these are verses in motion, indeed.

What a gorgeous collaboration….each piece strong on its own, but together…evocatively powerful. I was drawn in and there, I remain…Beautiful work, all.

      Thank you, Shell.
The making itself was a great experience, too, not least because we didn’t need a lot of words… Then again, you know yourself how words and images can meet each other in the strangest of ways ;)

I thank you, Laura, for the great opportunity. Without the poem it wouldn’t have been possible, so that’s where it all starts and leads back to. It’s an amazing piece!
